Minister Sheila Copps Presents the Jubilee Medal

HAMILTON, November 28, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today presided over the award ceremony for the Commemorative Medal for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee. Forty-two residents of Hamilton and Burlington were honoured by the Minister of Canadian Heritage.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am proud to be here to honour, with the Commemorative Medal for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee, these Canadians who have made a significant contribution to Canada, their community or to other Canadians," said Minister Copps.

Approximately 46 000 Canadians will receive the Jubilee Medal in recognition of important accomplishments or distinguished service rendered to their fellow citizens, to their communities or to Canada. So that Canadians from coast to coast could have the opportunity to be awarded this medal, the choice of recipients was made by national and provincial non-governmental organizations, such as the Canadian Royal Legion, the Canadian Red Cross, Girl Guides of Canada and Scouts Canada, the Canadian Cancer Society and Athletics Canada, as well as by the Lieutenant Governors and Territorial Commissioners, provincial and territorial governments, and federal Members of Parliament.

The medal carries a contemporary effigy of The Queen on the obverse. The reverse features the design of a stylized maple leaf with CANADA at the bottom and the years 1952 and 2002 on the left and right of the Royal Cypher and Crown. The Medal is worn suspended from a broad royal blue ribbon, with red outer stripes, double white stripes with a red central stripe.

The Commemorative Medal for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee is part of the Canadian Honours System established in 1967.
