The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Restoration of the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada Building

OTTAWA, April 20, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $700,000 to the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada Foundation for the restoration of the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada building, in Montréal.

"I am proud of our partnership with the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada Foundation. By giving our youth an active role in the creative process, we emphasize their importance within society," said Minister Copps. "By restoring a site devoted to Canadian artistic development, we continue to make this country a springboard for new generations of musicians."

Jeunesses Musicales of Canada is part of the International Federation of Jeunesses Musicales, gathering more than 40 countries under the mandate to foster a love of music among young people.

Thanks to this financial support, Jeunesses Musicales of Canada will be developing a concert hall of about 100 seats dedicated to recitals and chamber music, as well as a music library serving young artists, researchers and the public. These two installations are part of the building's restoration, underlining the 50th anniversary of the national organization's founding.

The Government of Canada is proud to support the restoration of the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada building, and therefore to promote the growth and development of our country's culture. The Department of Canadian Heritage has made funding available to the restoration of the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada building under its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
