The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the 1690 The Siege of Québec... The Story of a Sunken Ship Exhibition

MONTRÉAL, April 18, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced $105,000 in funding to the 1690 The Siege of Québec... The Story of a Sunken Ship exhibition, to be held from April 19 to September 24, 2000 at the Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History.

"Discovering and rediscovering the Battle of Québec through these underwater ruins and artifacts will grant Canadians a greater understanding of our past and our origins," said Minister Copps. "Furthermore, through a tour of several Canadian cities, the exhibition will give both citizens and tourists an opportunity to understand this page of Canadian history."

The bilingual exhibition 1690 The Siege of Québec³The Story of a Sunken Ship presents this historic event through objects salvaged from the Elizabeth & Mary, a shipwreck found in 1994 off Baie-Trinité in the St. Lawrence River. The show uses new technology to bring to life several English and French participants from the Battle of Québec.

The Government of Canada is proud to support this exhibition, and therefore to promote our country's rich history.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has made its financial support of the 1690 The Siege of Québec... The Story of a Sunken Ship exhibition under its Museums Assistance Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the 1999 and 2000 federal budgets and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
