REGINA, May 12, 2000 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board Ralph Goodale announced funding of $500,000 over the next five years to the Saskatchewan Arts Stabilization Program Inc.

"The support of the Government of Canada to arts stabilization will help ensure the long-term vitality of performing arts organizations in Saskatchewan," said Minister Goodale. "Arts stabilization initiatives like this one help to ensure that all Canadians will continue to enjoy access to a wide range of Canadian stories and cultural experiences."

The goal of arts stabilization is to stabilize the operating cycle of arts organizations, improve their financial management, and ensure their long-term success by providing access to technical expertise and funding though integrated public and private sector partnerships.

The Government of Canada's support for arts stabilization follows through its commitments in the Speech From the Throne and the recent policy paper, Connecting to the Canadian Experience, Diversity, Creativity, and Choice. The government is committed to encouraging performing arts organizations to develop greater stability through community support, partnerships, and stronger management. The Government already supports arts stabilization efforts in British Columbia, Alberta, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and Ontario.

Funding for this activity was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
