The Government of Canada Provides Financial Support to the Montreal Fringe Festival Corporation

MONTREAL, May 29, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced financial support of $10,000 to the 2000 edition of the Montreal Fringe Festival. This 10th edition will take place from June 2 to 11, in Montreal.

"There are innovative artists in our society who want to share their talent and imagination," Minister Copps said. "The Montreal Fringe Festival encourages creativity by showcasing the artists of tomorrow. It enables participants to express themselves freely and present their avant-garde vision of the world."

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Montreal Fringe Festival, which continues to offer promising Canadian and foreign artists an opportunity to achieve public recognition while enjoying total freedom of expression. More than 50 groups of performers from Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, Mali and other countries will present nearly 300 theatrical, musical and dance performances.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided financial support to the 10th Montreal Fringe Festival under its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
