Government Indemnification Assists Five Major Travelling Art and Heritage Exhibitions

OTTAWA, May 31, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the first five Canadian travelling art and heritage exhibitions to benefit from over $750,000 in savings provided though the Federal Government's new Indemnification Program for major travelling exhibitions of fine art and heritage collections.

" This new program will play an important role in bringing major Canadian and international exhibitions to Canadians across the country. By indemnifying travelling exhibitions against loss or damage, the Government is helping to ensure that more Canadians are able to experience the rich cultural heritage of Canada and the world," said Minister Copps.

Developed in partnership with Canadian art and heritage institutions, the Canada Travelling Exhibitions Indemnification Program makes exhibitions of this kind possible by reducing the insurance costs that museums would otherwise incur when mounting major travelling exhibitions, allowing host institutions to redirect funds to other priorities. The newly created program is available to qualifying museums, galleries, archives and libraries in every province and territory through an application and evaluation process that takes place twice a year.

The first indemnified travelling exhibitions, the Mystical Arts of Tibet, Renoir to Picasso, Monet, Renoir and the Impressionist Landscape, The Vikings and Skraelings in Newfoundland and Labrador and Treasures of Ancient China, will be presented by museums and galleries across Canada, from Newfoundland to Victoria, beginning this week and running until the fall.
