Copps Announces Funding for Mentorship Mechanism for Arts and Heritage Stabilization

HAMILTON, June 23, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $200,000 for the development of a mentorship mechanism for newly-established arts and heritage stabilization projects.

"New stabilization projects are being developed across the country," said Minister Copps. "Stabilization is a new instrument of change and renewal for Canadian arts and heritage organizations that helps stabilize their financial and administrative operations. The mentorship component, which I am announcing today, will provide them access to technical expertise acquired by their colleagues from well-established stabilization projects."

The Minister made the announcement at a national meeting on stabilization projects in Hamilton, hosted by the newly-established Bay Area Stabilization Project. It brought together stakeholders from stabilization projects, private foundations and the Canada Council for the Arts.

The Department of Canadian Heritage supported the first two projects, the Vancouver Arts Stabilization Team and the Alberta Performing Arts Stabilization Fund, in 1995. The total number of projects has grown to six, with additional stabilization projects in Nova Scotia, Hamilton/Wentworth and Burlington, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. These four projects are in their development phase and will benefit from this new mechanism. The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided a total funding of $5 million to these six projects.

Funding for this activity was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
