Launching of the Virtual Exhibit Panoramas: The North American Landscape in Art

HULL, April 3, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Ambassador of the United States to Canada Gordon D. Giffin and President of Mexico's National Council for Culture and the Arts Sari Bermudez today launched Panoramas: The North American Landscape in Art, the first international online exhibition endorsed by the three governments of North America. This event took place at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Hosted by the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), this online initiative presents works of art inspired by the landscapes of North America. Panoramas features more than 300 works by artists representing three countries and includes more than 100 works by Canadian artists.

"Artists in Mexico, the United States and Canada have long taken inspiration from the landscapes that surround them. The art in this exhibit reflects not only our natural environments, but also our histories, our industries, our cultures and our belief systems," said Minister Copps. "This project will make our cultural heritage more accessible to the citizens of the three participating countries and to the entire world."

The Panoramas exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN), a special operating agency of the Department of Canadian Heritage; the Winnipeg Art Gallery; the Canadian Museum of Civilization; the Smithsonian America Art Museum; the U.S. Department of State; the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes of Mexico and Mexico's National Council for Arts and Culture.
The works highlighted in the exhibit were selected according to four themes: the Evolving Landscape, the Mythic Landscape, the Social Landscape and the Personal Landscape.
