The Government of Canada is Proud to Support the 7th Soirée des Masques

MONTREAL, January 23, 2001 -- The Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $80,000 to the Académie québécoise du théâtre to organize and present the seventh Soirée des Masques that will take place this February 4 in Montreal. These funds will also be used to coordinate one of the awards to be presented at this gala, the Masque de la Production franco-canadienne that recognizes the best play being produced by a French-Canadian theatre company located outside of Quebec.

"It is important to recognize and honour the creativity of local talent," said Minister Copps. "I am very proud to be associated with the Soirée des Masques, as it celebrates the accomplishments of our greatest actors and theatre professionals. Their talent provides creative reflections of our society in all its emotional depth through words, characters, costumes, sets, sound and design."

The Government of Canada is pleased to support this spectacular evening, where theatre professionals can gather to meet and exchange thoughts on their mutual passion the stage. These exchanges will undoubtedly give rise to other interesting projects that will capture the imagination of Canadian theatre enthusiasts.

The Department of Canadian Heritage provided this financial contribution through its Cultural Initiatives Program and its official languages support programs.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
