Larry Bagnell Announces Major Contribution to the Arts in the Yukon

WHITEHORSE, April 3, 2002 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Member of Parliament (Yukon) Larry Bagnell, today announced an investment of $85,000 for the arts in the Yukon.

"This investment will help build a more cohesive and creative Canada. It's about providing opportunities for Canadians throughout the Yukon to ensure that their rich and diverse stories are shared by all Canadians," said Mr. Bagnell.

Today's investment supports performing arts presenters and is made through the following two programs:

Arts Presentation Canada: 2 projects for a total of $9,000
Cultural Initiatives Program: 4 projects for a total of $76,000

Total: $85,000

This investment of $85,000 represents the first round of projects to be supported under Arts Presentation Canada which was created following the announcement of new funding for the arts and culture made by the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Canadian Heritage on May 2, 2001.

"Canada is known for its spirit of innovation and open society. More than ever, it is essential to expand opportunities for expression and to deepen connections between our communities, our regions, between Canada and the world. It is by giving all Canadians access to the rich diversity which defines us that we will contribute to the development of our society and of humanity as a whole," added Mr. Bagnell.

Program guidelines and application forms are available on the Department of Canadian Heritage Web site under "Application Forms" at www.canadianheritage.gc.ca

Funding for these projects was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.

Arts Presentation Canada

Arts Presentation Canada supports arts presenters to ensure that Canadians have direct access to diverse high quality artistic experiences in their communities. The program helps presenters to diversify their artistic offerings, engage in activities to reach out to new audiences, increase interaction between artists and local residents, and undertake networking initiatives. Ultimately, it will have a positive impact on the number of artistic tours across the country. The Development Support component encourages the development and emergence of new arts presenters and presenting initiatives, particularly in under-served communities.

Deadline:
Applicants have a choice of either an April 30th or September 30th deadline. Note that the Development Support component has an annual deadline of April 30th.
