The Government of Canada announces funding of $50,000 to the Francofolies de Montréal

MONTRÉAL, July 25, 2002 -- The Honourable Don Boudria, Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of his colleague the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding in the amount of $50,000 for the FrancoFolies de Montréal. The 14th edition of this major cultural event will take place from July 25 to August 3.

"Our Government is proud to support this event, which gathers audiences of every origin and musicians from the four corners of the world," said Minister Boudria. "This event allows artists and festival-goers to gather and celebrate their passion for Francophone song."

This significant cultural event promotes French-language song in Canada and increases the accessibility of Canadian artists to new audiences. The program includes more than 200 shows, 75% of which are presented free of charge on outdoor stages. Every year, almost half a million people attend the FrancoFolies de Montréal.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Cultural Initiatives Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
