The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Société de Diffusion Culturelle de la Baie-Des-Chaleurs

NEW CARLISLE, August 13, 2002 -- Georges Farrah, Member of Parliament (Bonaventure-Gaspé-Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $35,000 for the Société de Diffusion Culturelle de la Baie-des-Chaleurs, to help finance programming at the New Richmond Salle de Spectacles de la Baie-des-Chaleurs.

''I am pleased to announce this funding for a major presenter of cultural events in the Gaspé region,'' said Mr. Farrah. ''We can be proud of this local organization, which for many years has made performing arts accessible to citizens of the region."

As a result of this funding, the Salle de Spectacles de la Baie-des-Chaleurs in New Richmond will diversify its programming, by adding singers and Acadian theatre to its line-up. In order to serve the English-speaking community of the Baie-des-Chaleurs, English plays from New Brunswick and English-speaking Canadian artists will also be on the program.

The Société de Diffusion Culturelle de la Baie-des-Chaleurs is a major arts presenter in the region, and acts as a port of entry for Canadian artists featured on the Gaspé peninsula. In operation since 1991, the concert hall is one of the biggest independent venues dedicated to the performing arts in the Gaspé.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Arts Presentation Canada program. Arts Presentation Canada seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
