The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Valspec Inc.

SALABERRY-DE-VALLEYFIELD, August 18, 2002 -- Serge Marcil, Member of Parliament for Beauharnois-Salaberry, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $45,000 for Valspec Inc., to support its programming diversification strategy for the 2002-2003 artistic season.

"For 25 years, Valspec Inc. has acted as a primary cultural force in the du Suroît region. This local institution works conscientiously to offer a wide choice of increasingly varied artistic activities," said Mr. Marcil. "Together with its regional partners, this cultural promoter will be able to expand its influence and increase the number of its presentations, satisfying a larger number of spectators. It is a great regional success, which we can all be proud of."

Last year, this organization presented over 100 shows, which were seen by nearly 100 000 spectators. The programming covers all main artistic disciplines, with a particular emphasis on theatre. This funding will support Valspec's strategy to enlarge its audience and diversify its programming by including, among other things, dance and classical music. Its musical programming will also include a greater number of artists from other Canadian provinces.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Arts Presentation Canada program. The goal of this program is to give Canadians more opportunities to experience Canada's diversity and cultural wealth, and to have more access to professional artistic festivals, professional shows and other cultural products.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
