The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Les Voyagements

MONTRÉAL, August 27, 2002 -- Eleni Bakopanos, Member of Parliament (Ahuntsic), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $71,000 for Les Voyagements - Théâtre de creation en tournée.

"I am pleased to announce this funding for Les Voyagements project, an initiative that takes creative theatre to outlying regions," said Ms. Bakopanos. "The energy created by Les Voyagements will help Francophone authors, actors, theatre professionals and playwrights become better known across the country."

The Voyagements project's goal is to increase the availability of creative theatre and to establish permanent ties among Francophone communities throughout Canada. Over the course of the year, regional meetings will be organized and a national forum will be held, to ensure that producers are trained and activities are coordinated. The project was developed by Réseau Scènes, a group of cultural producers located on the outskirts of Montréal, in cooperation with several Quebec-based partners.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Arts Presentation Canada program. Arts Presentation Canada seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
