The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Calgary International Children's Festival

CALGARY, October 24, 2002 -- Anne McLellan, Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Edmonton West, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $28,000 for the Calgary International Children's Festival.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that is committed to support access to the arts for all Canadians and to foster creativity, diversity and excellence," said Minister McLellan. "Moreover, we are helping to ensure that arts organizations can attain some stability so they can focus on what they do best."

Funding was provided to the Festival for a school marketing/box office initiative to enhance the participation of schools in the annual Children's Festival. The project will include a customized school brochure and a school box office system that will enable the educational sector to plan school visits to the Festival into the curriculum. The 2003 Calgary International Children's Festival will take place May 20 - 24.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Arts Presentation Canada program. The program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
