The Government of Canada Announces Funding for Visible Art Society

VANCOUVER, November 20, 2002 -- Minister of Natural Resources Canada and Member of Parliament (Vancouver South-Burnaby) Herb Dhaliwal, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $12,500 for the Visible Art Society.

"I am proud to be part of a Government that is committed to support access to the arts for all Canadians and to foster creativity, diversity and excellence," said Minister Dhaliwal. "Moreover, we are helping to ensure that arts organizations can attain some stability so they can focus on what they do best."

Funding was provided to host Indian Acts: Aboriginal Performance Art, a networking and professional development conference bringing together Aboriginal artists and arts presenters. The event will be held in late 2002, and will result in a publication in 2003 focussing on opening new opportunities in Canadian Aboriginal performance art.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Arts Presentation Canada program. The program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
