The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Celtic Colours Festival Society

SYDNEY, December 6, 2002 -- Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament (Sydney-Victoria), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $43,000 for the Celtic Colours Festival Society.

"The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring access to the arts for all Canadians in communities across Canada," said Mr. Eyking. "Arts and culture bring us together and help us learn more about our history and our identity."

This funding will help the Celtic Colours Festival Society organize the 2003 Celtic Colours Festival, in October. The nine-day festival celebrates Cape Breton's Celtic culture. Events are held in over 30 communities throughout Cape Breton Island.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Arts Presentation Canada program. The program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
