The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Société de diffusion culturelle de la Baie-des-Chaleurs Inc.

NEW RICHMOND, December 19, 2002 -- Georges Farrah, Member of Parliament (BonaventureÑGaspéÑÎles-de-la-MadeleineÑPabok), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $45,000 in funding for the Société de diffusion culturelle de la Baie-des-Chaleurs, to help it increase and diversify its programming for the 2003-2004 season.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support the work of the Société de diffusion culturelle," said Mr. Farrah. "This organization makes us aware of our cultural and artistic richness, by offering performances by local and visiting artists. In this way, it contributes to the cultural vitality of our region and the harmonious development of our communities."

The Société de diffusion culturelle de la Baie-des-Chaleurs offers an average of 24 professional performances annually, involving theatre, song, dance and music, and also offers activities for families and children. Almost 25,000 people attend the performances each year.

The funding will allow the Société to increase its number of performances to 31 for the 2003-2004 season. The organization also plans to develop partnerships with English and French theatres in New Brunswick and groups in the rest of Canada and other countries. The Société hopes to reach a larger audience with its artistic and cultural activities.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
