The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Concerts Ponticello

GATINEAU, December 18, 2002 -- Marcel Proulx, Member of Parliament (Hull-Aylmer), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $8,000 in funding for Concerts Ponticello, to help finance its 2003-2004 season. This concert series is devoted to chamber music performances, offered, for the most part, outside urban centres in the Outaouais region.

"The Concerts Ponticello is a pioneering event in the Outaouais, allowing local residents to enjoy high-calibre concerts in their own community," said Mr. Proulx. "This cultural initiative fits perfectly within the priorities of the Department of Canadian Heritage and its work to grant all Canadians wide-ranging access to our artistic and cultural wealth."

Concerts Ponticello offers 10 concerts each year, nearly half of which are held in small communities, such as Buckingham, Cantley, Montebello, and Shawville. The organization is the only group to regularly offer chamber music in the region, and hopes to continue increasing its audiences. Thanks to the Government of Canada's support, the 2003-2004 program will include two free concerts in an effort to reach a new audience.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
