Government of Canada Announces Funding for the East Coast Music Association

CHARLOTTETOWN, February 4, 2003 -- Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $31,901 for the East Coast Music Association. This funding helps finance the East Coast Music Association's day-to-day activities, which include providing member representation and observing new trends in an ever-changing industry.

"The Government of Canada supports Canadian talent on every level," said Mr. Murphy. "The Canada Music Fund touches on every area where support is required, from creator to audience. Last year, thousands of groups and individuals across Canada were assisted by the Canada Music Fund's programs."

The funding comes from the Support to Sector Associations Program of the Canada Music Fund. It will assist the East Coast Music Association in realizing its mandate of fostering, developing, promoting, and celebrating the music of Atlantic Canada locally and globally.

Well known artists such as Natalie McMaster, Sloan, Damhnait Doyle, Great Big Sea, Lennie Gallant, Julian Austin, and Sarah MacLachlan all have thriving careers that were given a boost by the East Coast Music Association.

Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps announced the Canada Music Fund in
June 2001, as part of the new policy directions for the Canadian sound recording industry and the Tomorrow Starts Today celebrations. For more information on the Canada Music Fund's programs, visit www.canadianheritage.gc.ca
