Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Osborne Village Cultural Centre Inc. and the Women's Musical Club of Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, February 7, 2003 -- Anita Neville, Member of Parliament (Winnipeg South Centre), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $51,400 for the Osborne Village Community Centre and of $6,000 for the Women's Musical Club.

"The Government of Canada is committed to support access to the arts for all Canadians, and to foster creativity, diversity, and excellence," said Ms. Neville. "While carrying out two very diverse mandates, comedy and classical music, both of these organizations have enriched the lives of all Manitobans with their ingenuity and vibrancy."

The Osborne Village Community Centre's Annual Winnipeg Improv Festival and The Comedy Festival, which takes place from February 26 to March 2, 2003, will feature live performances by some of Canada's leading artists. These festivals, which include workshops in comedy and improvisation, will increase public appreciation of comedy as a unique and accessible art form.

Since its inception in 1894, the Women's Musical Club has supported Canadian musicians at the outset of their professional careers. With the presentation of a series of five classical music concerts in 2002-2003, this organization will continue to provide Canadians with more opportunities to directly experience the diversity and richness of classical music.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Arts Presentation Canada program. The program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
