Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Fondation du Théâtre du Nouveau Monde

MONTREAL, February 24, 2003 -- Lucienne Robillard, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament
(WestmountÑVille-Marie), on behalf of Canadian Heritage Minister Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $72,186 for the Fondation du Théâtre du Nouveau Monde to help finance its growth sustainability plan.

"The Government of Canada proudly supports a dynamic organization that has been at the heart of Quebec theatrical production for more than 50 years," said Ms. Robillard. "This financial support will allow the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde to continuously increase its audience."

The funding from Canadian Heritage will enable the theatre to carry out a three-part plan. The first part of the plan will increase public awareness in order to gain loyalty from an increasingly diverse audience. The second part aims to develop new fundraising approaches by exploring corporate and philanthropic venues. The third part involves improving the internal management to reflect the growth in the theatre's activities over the last several years.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program.

Funding for this program was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
