The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Montmagny Carrefour Mondial de L'accordéon

MONTMAGNY, February 24, 2003 -- Gilbert Normand, Member of Parliament (Bellechasse-Etchemins-Montmagny-L'Islet), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $35,000 in funding for the 15th edition of the Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon in Montmagny, to take place from August 28 to
September 1, 2003.

"As a result of its consistently rich and original programming, the Montmagny Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon has enriched the cultural life of the entire region for 15 years," said Mr. Normand. "My thanks to the artists, organizers and volunteers who, for years, have helped make this local event a great internationall success and a wonderful opportunity for the Montmagny."

The 15th edition of the Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon will provide a varied program featuring performances by artists from many countries and regions of Canada, including Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island.

Established in 1989, Carrefour mondial de l'accordéon's mandate is to make the many forms of the accordion known by showcasing the plethora of musical styles associated with it.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
