Government of Canada Announces Funding for Arts Presenters in Yukon

WHITEHORSE, April 3, 2003 -- Larry Bagnell, Member of Parliament (Yukon), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $73,000 to enrich Yukon's cultural scene.

"The Government of Canada is committed to support performing arts organizations, which enhance our communities' cultural life," said Mr. Bagnell. "The diverse programming offered by Yukon arts presenters fosters community connections and creates a legacy of excellence that inspires the creators of tomorrow."

This funding will help six arts organizations, including professional arts festivals and arts presenters, deliver programs and activities in their communities. Funding will also support outreach projects, programming development, and the presentation of Canadian and international works. Organizations that are receiving funding are: Nakai Theatre Ensemble ($12,000); Frostbite Music Society ($16,000); Farrago Music Festival Society ($13,000); Skookum Jim Friendship Centre ($3,000); Dawson City Arts Society ($6,000); and Whitehorse Concerts ($ 23,000).

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
