Minister Copps Announces Funding for Arts, Culture and Heritage Initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador

ST. JOHN'S, April 14, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $323,275 for a variety of arts, culture and heritage initiatives in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The Government of Canada is committed to support the arts sector, which contributes so much to the cultural life of our communities," said Minister Copps. "We believe it is essential to support and promote artistic creativity and public access to the arts. These projects represent some of the best of Newfoundland and Labrador's talent and culture."

Funding is provided by Canadian Heritage, through the Arts Presentation Canada (APC) Program, the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP), and the Trade Routes Program.

The APC Program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

The CAHSP's objective is to support modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. This national program improves conditions for cultural organizations in local Canadian communities.

Trade Routes is the Department of Canadian Heritage's strategy to expand international markets for Canada's arts and cultural sector.

Funding for these initiatives was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
