Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Théâtre Populaire d'Acadie

CARAQUET, April 25, 2003 -- Claudette Bradshaw, Minister of Labour and Member of Parliament (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $150,000 for the Fondation des caisses populaires acadiennes pour le Théâtre populaire d'Acadie. With this funding, the Government of Canada hopes to encourage Canadians to give generously to the Théâtre populaire d'Acadie. This financial support will match funds already raised in order to put the Théâtre populaire's finances on a solid footing.

"The Government of Canada ensures that all Canadians have access to arts and culture," said Minister Bradshaw. "Thanks to the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program, Canadian cultural organizations can receive funding that recognizes fundraising success among the general public and among their most ardent, dedicated supporters. The Théâtre populaire d'Acadie's initiative and effort in seeking financial stability, while at the same time maintaining the highest standards of artistic merit, are rewarded."

For almost thirty years, the Théâtre populaire d'Acadie has been producing original and innovative plays, which it presents throughout the Maritime provinces and la Francophonie. The theatre plays an active role in the creation as well as in the growth and development of authentically Acadian professional theatre.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Endowment Incentives component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. Under this initiative, Government funding is added to funds already raised. The initiative encourages private giving to the endowment funds of arts organizations, in order that these organizations may gain access to new and predictable sources of funds.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
