Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association, Atlantic Progress Publishing and the Symphony Nova Scotia Foundation

HALIFAX, April 28, 2003 -- Robert Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Member of Parliament (West Nova), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage
Sheila Copps, today announced three funding initiatives, totalling $408,838. This funding will contribute to the growth and success of the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association, Atlantic Progress Publishing, and Symphony Nova Scotia Foundation.

"From one end of this country to the other, the Government of Canada supports cultural industries so that they can continue to enrich our culture," said Minister Thibault. "This region is recognized for its dynamism, and I am pleased to say that these contributions will help build on a long tradition of Nova Scotian culture."

The Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association will receive $162,473 to support the Atlantic Books Today project. Atlantic Books Today is a quarterly publication focussing on books about Atlantic Canada that are published in this region of Canada. This funding will enable the Association to continue promoting local books.

Atlantic Progress Publishing will receive $102,415 in funding to support the publication of its Atlantic Progress magazine, which covers economic and political events in the Atlantic provinces. This funding will enable the organization to continue to invest in the quality of the magazine, both in terms of its design and its content.

The Symphony Nova Scotia Foundation will receive $143,950. This funding will enable the Halifax Orchestra to put its finances on a solid footing and ensure that it has the funds needed to pursue its artistic projects.

This financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian through three separate programs: the Book Publishing Industry Development Program, the Canada Magazine Fund, and the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program.
