Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Société pour la Promotion de la Danse Traditionnelle Québécoise

MONTREAL, May 2, 2003 -- Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of International Trade and Member of Parliament for
Papineau -- Saint-Denis, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $40,000 for the Société pour la promotion de la danse traditionnelle québécoise (SPDTQ). This funding will help the SPDTQ create a marketing and development plan as well as evaluate its future potential as a museum.

"The Société helps keep our traditional arts alive among younger generations and builds bridges between Francophones, Anglophones and Allophones of all ages who take an interest in traditional Quebec culture," said Minister Pettigrew. "I am very pleased that the Government of Canada supports this organization and congratulate all those who have made the project possible."

The SPDTQ promotes Quebec traditions and arts, including dance, music and song, as well as the sharing of knowledge and expertise related to these traditions. The SPDTQ added research and maintaining documentation on living history to its production and promotion activities. This project will allow the SPDTQ to move to a new location where its entire training and promotional activities can take place under one roof, and where living history will be present within a museum environment.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
