Government of Canada Announces Financial Support for the Moulin à Musique

MONTRÉAL, May 14, 2003 -- Liza Frulla, Member of Parliament (Verdun-St-Henri-St-Paul-Pointe-St-Charles), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced $12,400 in funding for the Moulin à musique. This support will help the music and theatre company reach a new level of international prominence by developing new markets in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

"For nearly 20 years the Moulin à musique has achieved remarkable success showcasing music and theatre productions in Quebec," said Ms. Frulla. "I am very pleased that the Government of Canada is supporting this company and helping it reach new heights on the international stage. The result will be better access to high-quality performances for people throughout Canada and around the world."

Federal assistance will allow the company's recently hired international development coordinator to devise a detailed marketing plan for reaching audiences outside Quebec, to carry out a feasibility study, and to prepare a research plan focussing on foreign broadcasters.

Founded in 1986, the Moulin à musique develops, produces, and stages performances that combine theatre and music for audiences of all ages. Much of the company's work focusses on highlighting the fundamental link between music and drama. Its productions are generally staged in schools and other performance halls throughout Quebec.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal budget.
