Minister of Canadian Heritage Announces Appointments to the National Gallery of Canada

OTTAWA, June 2, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the appointment of Rhoda Kokiapik, of Inukjuak, Quebec, as trustee of the National Gallery of Canada Board of Trustees, for a three-year term.

Rhoda Kokiapik, the Executive Director of the Avataq Cultural Institute since 1998, is very active in her community. Trained in artifact preservation and exhibition planning, she has greatly contributed to the promotion of artists in Nunavik. Last January, Ms. Kokiapik travelled to Japan to act as an advisor for an exhibition organized at the National Museum of Japan.

The National Gallery of Canada Corporation is responsible for the management of the National Gallery of Canada and its affiliate the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography. It develops, maintains and makes known, throughout Canada and internationally, a collection of both historic and contemporary art, with special but not exclusive reference to Canada.
