The Government of Canada Announces Funding to the Écomusée du fier monde inc.

MONTREAL, June 16, 2003 -- Yvon Charbonneau, Member of Parliament (Anjou Rivières-des-Prairies), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $35,000 for the Écomusée du fier monde inc. The funds will enable the museum to implement marketing and press relations strategies that will allow it to become more financially self-sufficient, and to improve its administrative management.

"The Écomusée du fier monde is unique among organizations that preserve and promote our heritage," said Mr. Charbonneau. "An important part of Montreal's modern history has been safeguarded and, by visiting the museum, Canadians gain a greater appreciation for those who developed our country."

The Écomusée du fier monde's goal is to provide public access to significant collections of artifacts that reflect Montreal's heritage, and to preserve and maintain them over the long term. The collections' main themes are industrialization, work, and culture, aiming specifically to make heritage and history accessible through public education and collective action. The museum has a specific focus on the southern downtown area of Montreal.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP). The CAHSP's objective is to support modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. This national program improves conditions for cultural organizations in local Canadian communities.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
