Government of Canada Announces Funding for Le Centre Culturel Le Chenail

HAWKESBURY, July 18, 2003 -- The Honourable Don Boudria, Minister of State and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of his colleague, the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding of $27,000 for le Centre culturel Le Chenail.

"The future of French-speaking communities across Canada relies heavily on the presence of Francophone institutions," said Minister Boudria. "The Centre culturel Le Chenail makes a big difference to the cultural life of Francophones in Hawkesbury. The Government of Canada's funding to this organization demonstrates its commitment to the promotion of Canada's linguistic duality."

Between April 2003 and March 2004, le Centre culturel Le Chenail will offer a series of shows, ranging from musical concerts to theatre presentations. In addition, le Centre will present an audience development project targeted at students. This project will focus on the future of French-language arts and culture in Ontario.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the 2003 federal budget.
