Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Centre d'archives régional des Îles

ÎLES-DE-LA-MADELEINE, August 21, 2003 -- Georges Farrah, Member of Parliament (Bonaventure-Gaspé-Îles-de-la-Madeleine-Pabok), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $4,000 for the Centre d'archives régional des Îles to help adapt its policies and procedures to match its expanded mission and its relocation to new, more appropriate offices.

"Keeping archives is a very important way to preserve our heritage and to make this knowledge accessible to future generations," said Mr. Farrah. "I am pleased to announce this funding for an organization that fulfills such a vital need in the Magdalen Islands."

The funds will help the Centre d'archives régional des Îles review its policies and procedures and develop its administrative and planning capacities. The Centre will also benefit from greater visibility and more traffic in its new location closer to the Collège de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine library and municipal documentation centre. New policies and procedures will allow the Centre to work in partnership with the Collège de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine, while improving archive access and collection services.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Capacity Building component of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. This national program improves conditions for cultural organizations in local Canadian communities.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
