Government of Canada Announces Funding for Jeunesses Musicales Canada

MONTRÉAL, September 15, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $30,000 for Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JMC) to help finance the 2003-2004 season of the JMC chamber music hall in Montréal.

"The Government of Canada is proud to be associated with Jeunesses Musicales Canada, an organization renowned for its commitment to youth and the arts," said Minister Copps. "Thanks to their remarkable work, countless young Canadians are introduced to classical music through a dynamic and varied program."

Four concert series will address a broad spectrum of audiences throughout the 2003-2004 season. The Éveil musical is intended for children aged 3 to 12, Les dimanches des concertants is aimed at local families, La musique sur un plateau highlights budding artists, and Un été à la maison brings classical and jazz musicians together. More than 10 000 spectators will enjoy some 163 concerts in all.

Jeunesses Musicales Canada is a non-profit organization founded in 1951. Its goals are to promote musical culture and the cultural development of young Canadians, and to aid Canadian artists in the pursuit of their profession.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
