Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Confederation Centre of the Arts

CHARLOTTETOWN, October 14, 2003 -- Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $19,700 for the Confederation Centre of the Arts.

"Each year, thousands of Canadians and tourists come to Prince Edward Island to take part in cultural activities that have gained a solid reputation that extends beyond our borders," said Mr. Murphy. "The Government of Canada is committed to helping artistic groups like the Confederation Centre of the Arts to ensure their long-term financial sustainability and to support cultural development in their communities."

The funding will allow the Confederation Centre of the Arts to conduct a feasibility study that will review the organisation's current fundraising activities to determine the best strategy for the future implementation of an endowment campaign.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Capacity Building for Arts Organizations component of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program (CAHSP). The CAHSP's objective is to support modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. This national program improves conditions for cultural organizations in local Canadian communities.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
