Government of Canada announces funding for the arts community in Manitoba

WINNIPEG, October 31, 2003 -- Rey Pagtakhan, regional Minister for Manitoba and Member of Parliament (Winnipeg North St. Paul), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $519,500 for the arts community in Manitoba.

"The Government of Canada is committed to supporting arts and culture in Manitoba, which contribute so much to the vibrancy of our communities," said Minister Pagtakhan. "We believe it is essential to support and promote artistic creativity and facilitate access, for all Canadians, to the arts. The projects announced today represent some of the best of Manitoba's talent and dynamic culture."

This investment will support arts presenters' efforts to increase and diversify their programming, to organize audience development and outreach activities, and to develop initiatives that bring the arts and artists into close contact with citizens in their communities. This financial support will also allow for the establishment of networks and for professional development of the presenters themselves, as well as supporting the development and emergence of new arts presenters in underserved communities.

The funding will be shared among 13 organizations in the first series of Arts Presentation Canada projects to be approved in Manitoba for 2004-2005. The organizations are:

Ï Manitoba Theatre Centre Inc.
Ï Winnipeg Centennial Folk Festival Inc.
Ï Burrows Trail Arts Council Inc.
Ï Winnipeg International Writers Festival Inc.
Ï Manitoba Theatre for Young People Inc.
Ï Groundswell Inc.
Ï West End Cultural Centre Inc.
Ï Virtuosi Concerts (MB) Inc.
Ï India School of Dance Music and Theatre Inc.
Ï Jazz Winnipeg Inc.
Ï Storyline FX Inc.
Ï Manitoba Association of Community Arts Councils, Inc.
Ï Winnipeg International Children's Festival Inc.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Arts Presentation Canada Program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for these initiatives was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
