Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Centre acadien de l'Université Sainte-Anne

CHURCH POINT, November 10, 2003 -- Robert Thibault, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Member of Parliament (West Nova), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps and Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) Gerry Byrne, today announced funding of $145,000 for the Centre acadien de l'Université Sainte-Anne for the project "Généalogie informatisée de familles acadiennes".

"The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that all Canadians discover the rich Francophone heritage that the first French settlers brought to North America," said Minister Thibault. "The founding of Acadia in 1604 is a proud historic moment for all Francophone communities, and specifically for those in Atlantic Canada. The Government of Canada is proud to be a partner in the 400th anniversary of Acadia. This unique occasion will create strong links between all citizens of our country."

The funding announced today will allow the Centre acadien de l'Université Sainte-Anne to digitize genealogies of Acadian families, as well as to better respond to increased requests on genealogical information.

Funding is provided under the Atlantic Canada Cultural and Economic Partnership, a $10-million, three-year initiative, which is funded jointly by the Department of Canadian Heritage and ACOA. The Partnership, in effect until March 31, 2005, will stimulate economic development in the region through the rich culture and heritage of Atlantic Canada by highlighting the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Acadia, which will take place in 2004.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
