Government of Canada supports the Coopérative des travailleuses et travailleurs de théâtre des Bois-Francs

VICTORIAVILLE, December 8, 2003 -- Serge Marcil, Member of Parliament (Beauharnois Salaberry), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $16,000 for the Coopérative des travailleuses et travailleurs de théâtre des Bois-Francs, also known as Théâtre Parminou. This funding will enable the Coopérative to present the Rencontres internationales du théâtre d'intervention (R.I.T.I.) in Victoriaville and Québec City in June 2004.

"I am proud that the Government of Canada supports the artists of Théâtre Parminou who, for more than 30 years, have brought both excellence and originality to Quebec stages," said Mr. Marcil. "Their productions always attract new audiences, and contribute to Canada's artistic and cultural vitality."

The Rencontres internationales du théâtre d'intervention brings together artists from Canada, Africa, Europe, and Asia, to share information, to receive training, to debate, and to reflect on issues affecting the world of theatre and our society. The meetings will also help to establish new artistic and social partnerships, and to launch new street theatre projects.

With this funding, the Coopérative hopes to boost its artistic creativity and increase its influence across Canada and around the world.

Founded in 1977, Théâtre Parminou develops popular theatre focusing on social problems. Half of its programming is aimed at youth and the other half tackles issues such as violence towards women and the elderly, sexual abuse, poverty, and problems in Aboriginal communities. Each year, more than 75 000 people attend the shows, and the troupe benefits from the support of the artistic community and several renowned artists.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. It also improves conditions for cultural organizations in local Canadian communities.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
