Théâtre du Trident and Les Violons du Roy has fundraising campaign income doubled by government of Canada

BEAUPORT, April 13, 2004 -- The Government of Canada will double the amount raised through the 2003-2004 private sector fundraising campaigns of the Théâtre du Trident and Les Violons du Roy. The Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage announced this today at a news conference held at the headquarters of the Fondation communautaire du Grand Québec. Representatives of the organizations receiving the funding were present for the announcement.

Though the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program, the Government of Canada will contribute $42,000 to the Théâtre du Trident and almost $5,500 to Les Violons du Roy. These amounts are equivalent to those raised by the two organizations through their fundraising efforts this year.

"Arts organizations contribute to the vitality of our communities, and enrich our quality of life," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "The Théâtre du Trident and Les Violons du Roy, which have known tremendous success, are both excellent examples of the role arts groups play in raising the profile of Québec City on the national and international scene. The Government of Canada is proud to match the amount collected for their foundations through their 2004-2005 fundraising campaign dollar for dollar. The support we are providing will enable these two groups to increase their revenue and find new sources of funding."

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Endowment Incentives component of the Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. Under this initiative, Government funding is added to funds already raised. The initiative encourages private donations to the endowment funds of arts organizations, so that these organizations may gain access to new and predictable sources of funds. This program was launched as part of the Tomorrow Starts Today arts funding initiative. The budget for this important undertaking, which was renewed in 2004-2005 for a fourth year, is now $207 million.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.

Les Violons du Roy

The chamber orchestra Les Violons du Roy borrows its name from the string orchestra of the court of the French kings. The group, which has a core membership of fifteen players, was brought together in 1984 by artistic director Bernard Labadie, specializes in the vast repertoire of music for chamber orchestra, performing in the style of each period.

A pillar of the musical scene in Québec City and well-known throughout Canada for its many concerts and its recordings for the CBC and Radio-Canada, Les Violons du Roy has made more than a hundred international concert appearances since 1988. North American and European tours have been scheduled until 2006.

Five were nominated for Juno awards, and two (Handel's Apollo e Dafne and Mozart's Requiem) won the Juno award for Best Classical Album, Choral or Vocal Performance.
