Government of Canada Supports Professional Development Opportunities for PEI Museum Employees and Volunteers

CHARLOTTETOWN, May 10, 2004 -- The Government of Canada will collaborate with the Community Museums Association of P.E.I. Inc. on a project that will offer professional development opportunities to employees and volunteers of Prince Edward Island museums. This announcement was made today by the Honourable Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament (Hillsborough), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

"Local heritage institutions are important to the development of communities across Canada," said Mr. Murphy. "Museum employees and volunteers are committed to strengthening the awareness of Canadians of our rich heritage and cultural diversity."

"The Government of Canada is committed to support facilities which enrich the cultural life of our communities and create a legacy of excellence," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "It is essential to invest in arts and heritage organizations in order to build an innovative and diverse country."

The group will receive funding of $25,400 to develop and deliver professional development opportunities to Prince Edward Island museum employees and volunteers. Sessions will focus on training needs and opportunities relevant to the Island's museums community.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under its Museums Assistance Program (MAP). The MAP provides financial support to Canadian Museums and related institutions for projects that foster excellence in museum activities and that facilitate access to the treasures of our collective heritage.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
