The Quebec City Summer Festival enters its 37th season

QUÉBEC, May 19, 2004 -- Thanks to the participation of the Government of Canada, the Quebec City Summer Festival will expand its horizons with an even greater variety of programming this year. The Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced financial assistance for the 37th season of this wide-ranging cultural festival, which will be held from July 8 to 18, 2004 in Quebec City.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support this major summer festival, which brings together spectators and performers from here and around the world," Minister Chalifour Scherrer said. "I would like to congratulate the artists, organizers and volunteers who enable the people from the region and visitors alike to experience the magic and to benefit from all of Québec's attractions."

The 37th season of the Festival will feature more than 400 shows, and will headline more than 800 internationally renowned musicians and up-and-coming artists. The Festival will present a varied musical program to delight music enthusiasts and festival-goers from all cultural backgrounds.

Financial assistance of $150 000 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. The goal of this program is to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live, professional performances and certain artistic experiences provided by arts presenters. It is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year, with a total budget of $207 million.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
