Government of Canada supports the Vancouver Summer Festival Society

VANCOUVER, May 21, 2004 -- The Government of Canada is proud to provide support to the Vancouver Summer Festival Society, the organization responsible for Festival Vancouver 2004, as well as several other musical performances in British Columbia. This support was announced by the Honourable David Anderson, Minister of the Environment and Member of Parliament (Victoria), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

"Festival Vancouver has achieved high artistic standards and immense popularity," said Minister Anderson. "The support we are providing for this event will enable the Vancouver Summer Festival Society to continue to present outstanding musical performances and events that have a great impact on the cultural life of all citizens of British Columbia, and that contribute to enrichment of our region."

"This wonderful summer celebration, which brings together musicians and audience members from here and abroad, is an important cultural event for the city of Vancouver," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "This Festival is a window on Vancouver's cultural vitality, offering exceptional concerts to local audiences of all ages and backgrounds, as well as to visitors who are attracted by the Festival's reputation."

The Society will receive $200,000 to present a unique program of classical, jazz, and world music. Festival Vancouver offers audiences the opportunity to enjoy an eclectic mix of music and to meet a wide variety of musicians from Canada and abroad. During the 14-day event, the Society will also co-sponsor concerts in five cities and towns across the province as part of its commitment to community outreach.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. The goal of this program is to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences provided by arts presenters.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
