Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Argyle Municipality Historical and Genealogical Society

TUSKET, September 20, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (West Nova) Robert Thibault, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $37,640 in funding for the Argyle Municipality Historical and Genealogical Society. The funds will be used to restore an old church building, which is an important part of our built heritage, and transform it into an archival facility.

"Maintaining archives is an important way to preserve our heritage and to make it available to future generations," said Mr. Thibault. "I am pleased to announce this funding for an organization that offers Nova Scotians an opportunity to make links between the past and the present."

"The Government of Canada is committed to preserving our country's heritage," said Minister Frulla. "Institutions like the Argyle Municipality Historical and Genealogical Society are places of endless discovery and learning for Canadians, and represent a valuable part of our legacy for future generations."

The Society will restore the exterior of the church adjacent to the Argyle Township Court House and will renovate the interior into a modern archival facility. Archives currently stored in the Court House building will be transferred to the new facility. In addition, the Society will purchase specialized equipment to ensure the best conditions for archives inside the building.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to visual, media and performing arts and improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. Funding is also provided for the construction or renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities. This program is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which was recently renewed for a fourth year with $207 million in funding.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
