Two Cultural Facilities in Moncton to Be Improved

MONCTON, September 22, 2004 -- With support from the Government of Canada, the Capitol Theatre and the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada will upgrade their facilities. The announcement was made today by Minister of State (Human Resources Development) and Member of Parliament (Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe) Claudette Bradshaw, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla.

"The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring that Canadians have greater access to the arts, culture and heritage," said Minister of State Bradshaw. "When we invest in our arts and cultural organizations, we support creation and innovation. We also allow all Canadians to discover and appreciate the diversity and richness of our culture."

"The funding announced today is an excellent example of the important role the Government of Canada plays in the development and increasing stability of the arts and cultural sectors," added Minister Frulla.

The Capitol Theatre will receive $80,000 to help finance upgrades to its facility. The Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada will receive $47,784 to purchase a dance floor and lighting equipment for its touring performances.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to visual, media, and performing arts and improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. Funding is also provided for the construction or renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment, and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities. This program is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year with $207 million in funding.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
