Government of Canada Helps the Visual Arts Centre Upgrade its Facilities

MONTRÉAL, September 29, 2004 -- President of the Privy Council, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Member of Parliament (Westmount--Ville-Marie) Lucienne Robillard, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $143,705 in funding for the Visual Arts Centre. The funds will allow the organization to renovate and modernize its facilities in order to be able to better serve its growing clientele.

"The Visual Arts Centre offers Montréal residents quality teaching in several artistic disciplines," said Minister Robillard. "It allows the population to discover the pleasure of devoting themselves to art and contributes to Montréal's cultural vitality."

"Organizations like the Visual Arts Centre allow Canadians to take an active role in our cultural life and to enrich our collective heritage for the benefit of future generations," said Minister Frulla. "We are proud to help these organizations offer excellent services to communities across the country."

The Visual Arts Centre was established by a group of artists and has become a major exhibition and learning centre over the course of the years, thanks to partnerships with other Montréal organizations. More than 3000 students take classes at the Centre.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports infrastructure projects to increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts and also improves physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. The program is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year, with $207 million in funding.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
