Government of Canada supports Capitol Theatre and Arts Centre in Windsor
WINDSOR, September 29, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Chatham-Kent--Essex) Jerry Pickard, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $100,000 in funding for the Capitol Theatre and Arts Centre in Windsor. The funds will allow the organization to purchase specialized technical equipment for its Pentastar Playhouse."The Government of Canada is committed to supporting access to the arts across the country, said Mr. Pickard. "I am pleased that this organization will benefit from funding to help it offer quality productions to local residents."
"Arts organizations make a significant contribution to the vitality of our communities," said Minister Frulla. "That's why our Government is proud to provide this cultural institution with the means to continue to highlight the arts and culture in the Windsor area."
Built in the 1920's, the Capitol Theatre was saved from demolition in 1991 through the efforts of a community group. In 1993, the theatre became a non-profit charitable public trust, which presents a varied program of musical and theatrical presentations.
Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada Program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic events. This program is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year, with $207 million in funding.
Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
