Government of Canada Supports Ottawa Chamber Music Society

OTTAWA, October 15, 2004 -- Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament (OttawaÑVanier) Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $30,000 in funding for the Ottawa Chamber Music Society.

"The Ottawa Chamber Music Society was founded ten years ago, and its reputation now extends well beyond the National Capital Region," said Mr. Bélanger. "This funding will allow the Society to continue to present concerts, a festival, and various activities that enrich cultural life in the greater Ottawa area."

"Through its efforts to make chamber music accessible to as many people as possible, the Ottawa Chamber Music Society provides wonderful exposure for our greatest musicians," added Minister Frulla. "I commend the energy of all those who help make this cultural institution a gem of our National Capital."

Throughout 2004, the Ottawa Chamber Music Society offers a variety of programming, including the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, which presented 110 concerts over 15 days in July and August, a series of 14 other concerts, and the Family Music Fair, which introduces music lovers of all ages to chamber music. Artists from across Canada and around the world take part in these various activities.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program. This program seeks to give Canadians more access to direct experiences of the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences by arts presenters. This program is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year, with $207 million in funding.

The funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal Budget.
