Government of Canada Supports Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia

WINDSOR, October 20, 2004 -- Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Member of Parliament (Kings-Hants) Scott Brison, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced funding of $121,153 for the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. The funds will allow for the purchase of specialized equipment to complete the restoration of the Imperial Theatre, where the theatre company presents marionette shows and young people's theatre.

"The Government of Canada is committed to ensuring access to the arts and culture in all parts of the country, and this project is consistent with this goal," said Minister Brison. "This investment will generate important cultural, economic, and social benefits in our region."

"Investing in our communities' cultural projects stimulates creativity, encourages development in the arts, and helps improve quality of life, added Minister Frulla. "I am pleased to support the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, which allows young people across the country and the world to discover and appreciate the vitality of our theatre and the richness of our culture."

Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia creates and presents high-quality theatrical works for children. Since its creation 32 years ago, the theatre company has performed across Canada and in various parts of the world before hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts, and also improves conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. Funding is also provided for the construction or renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment, and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities. This program is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year, with $207 million in funding.

Funding for this project was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
