Government of Canada supports Le Réseau Scènes

MONTRÉAL, November 2, 2004 -- Member of Parliament (Ahuntsic) and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Social Development with special emphasis on Social Economy Eleni Bakopanos, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $70,362 in funding for Réseau Scènes, a group of 21 multidisciplinary arts promoters.

Of the total funding amount, $50,000 will help Le Réseau Scènes enlarge its network of talent agents throughout Canada and create associations with other networks across the country. The remaining $20,362 will help finance the creation of a Web site to facilitate the exchange of information among the various clients of the organization, which include promoters, artists, and the public.

"Creativity is blossoming across the country," said Ms. Bakopanos. "This funding will help enrich it even further by ensuring the discovery of new talent and by giving Le Réseau Scènes the resources to publicize its mission."

"Canada's ulture is based in large part on its diversity and the talents of those who bring it to life," added Minister Frulla. "I am delighted to support the Réseau Scènes team in its efforts to put new artists on all Canadian stages."

Promoters within Le Réseau Scènes work in the areas of dance, song, jazz music, and young people's theatre.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Arts Presentation Canada program and the Capacity Building Component for Arts Organizations of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program.

The goal of the Arts Presentation Canada program is to allow Canadians to appreciate the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentation of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences. The Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations. Both programs are part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year, with $207 million in funding.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
