Government of Canada Supports Soulpepper Theatre Company

TORONTO, November 12, 2004 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, in the presence of her colleague, Minister of National Defence and Member of Parliament (Toronto Centre) Bill Graham, today announced $600,000 in funding for Soulpepper Theatre Company. This funding will allow the organization to cover a portion of the costs associated with the construction of a multi-purpose theatre complex and the purchase of specialized equipment.

"I am very pleased that our Government is able to assist our cultural institutions by providing Canadians with facilities where culture can flourish," said Minister Frulla. "I am confident that this project will enrich Toronto and Canada's cultural scene."

"This funding will allow Toronto's artistic community to have access to a high quality, multi-purpose facility," added Minister Graham. "Established and emerging artists will be able to share their experiences there while showcasing their talents and their passion for the arts."

In 1998, Soulpepper was founded by 12 Canadian actors. During the past five summer seasons, this theatre company has produced 26 acclaimed productions at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre, and presented 14 productions in Ottawa and Montreal. Its plays have been enjoyed by more than 500,000 people and have garnered numerous awards. Its youth training and mentoring programs are the core element of its Canadian theatre productions. More than 4,000 young people and emerging actors have participated in these programs.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and that improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. It is part of the Tomorrow Starts Today initiative, which has been renewed for a fourth year with $207 million in funding.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
